Continental policy co-lead

African Union Commission

The African Union Commission is the Secretariat of the African Union and coordinator of AU Specialized Technical Committees and engagement mechanisms. It is custodian of AU frameworks, the Plan of Action on Ageing, the Protocol to the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights on the Rights of Older Persons in Africa, common positions and service-delivery systems, with the convening power to engage African Member States.

UN DESA

The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs is the custodian and UN lead on global reviews and appraisals of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing, the Programme on Ageing and inclusive social development.

OHCHR

The Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights is the global focal office and facilitator of intergovernmental procedures for drafting an internationally binding instrument on the rights of older persons and reviewing the implementation of human rights.

International Institute on Ageing, UN-Malta

The International Institute on Ageing, United Nations–Malta, is a foremost training institute on ageing for developing countries. It has a 15-year training partnership with the Dave Omokaro Foundation, host of the Institute’s Satellite Centre for sub-Saharan Africa.

SGA Africa

The Stakeholder Group on Ageing Africa focuses on strengthening advocacy for rights-based implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals; ratification and operationalisation of the AU Protocol on the Rights of Older Persons; and the drafting of a new UN Convention on the Rights of Older Persons.
